Pekiti-Tirsia Kali: The Highly Effective Close-Quarters Fighting Art of the Philippines

What is Pekiti-Tirsia Kali?

Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is a dynamic and highly effective close-quarters combat system originating from the Visayan region of the Philippines. Rooted in the tactics and strategies of edged weapons, it offers a comprehensive approach to both armed and unarmed combat.

Designed to address threats from single or multiple attackers, Pekiti-Tirsia has evolved from its ancient roots to remain relevant in modern self-defense and combat applications. It is widely recognized for its effectiveness and is a trusted system for preparing law enforcement and military personnel.

In its homeland, Pekiti-Tirsia serves as the foundation for official combatives training in the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police. Globally, it has been adopted by thousands of police and military special operations units across Europe, India, Russia, United States and throughout Asia.

The system was formally established in 1897 by Grand Master (Tuhon) Conrado Tortal and kept within the Tortal family as a private martial tradition for generations. In 1972, Grand Tuhon Leo Tortal Gaje Jr., Conrado's grandson and the heir to the system, introduced Pekiti-Tirsia to the United States. Sweden was introduced to the system in 1995 by Tuhon Emeritus Michael Marlow, through Mas Guru Greg Alland. In 1996, Marlow formed the training group Pekiti-Tirsia Kali Sweden (Stockholm), bringing it under the direct guidance of Grand Tuhon Leo Tortal Gaje Jr. Since its beginning, the system has grown into an internationally respected discipline, inspiring the development of numerous modern combative systems.

Pekiti-Tirsia Kali Sweden proudly stands as the only authentic, nationwide source for Pekiti-Tirsia in Sweden. As a cornerstone of Filipino martial arts in the region, we proudly continue to represent the art with dedication.
